The cushion foundation obsession

The Western fascination with K-Beauty (Korean Beauty) makes the popularity of cushion foundations quite understandable. These foundations gained traction in South Korea around 2014, fueled by the rising K-Beauty trend and their appearance in popular K-dramas like My Love From the Star. By 2015 to 2018, the trend had gone global, with Western luxury brands quickly launching their own versions.
A cushion foundation consists of a liquid or cream foundation absorbed into a porous, sponge-like compact. It is applied by pressing an included antimicrobial puff into the cushion and gently spreading the product onto the face for a lightweight, buildable, and natural look. Cushion foundations are extremely popular because they offer the skincare benefits of a liquid combined with the convenience of a compact, providing a flawless, "second-skin" appearance. They are ideal for busy lifestyles, as they require no brushes or bottles and offer mess-free, buildable coverage.
The brand I recently tried is a product by TIRTIR. TIRTIR is a trending South Korean beauty brand founded in 2017 by influencer Lee Yoo-bin. The name stands for "Trust In Radiance," which reflects the brand's philosophy of blending skincare-focused ingredients with makeup to achieve healthy, glowing, "glass skin."

TIRTIR often ranks highly in Japanese cosmetic charts and is widely distributed in the J-beauty market, leading many consumers to believe it is a Japanese brand. This assumption is understandable given the brand's prominent presence in a market that is renowned for its high standards in skincare and beauty products. The Japanese beauty industry, often referred to as J-beauty, is celebrated globally for its innovative formulations, emphasis on quality ingredients, and a holistic approach to skincare that prioritizes health and radiance.
TIRTIR's consistent ranking at the top of these charts is indicative of its popularity and effectiveness among consumers who are increasingly discerning about the products they choose to incorporate into their beauty routines.

With the background information covered, let's explore the product itself. The TIRTIR Mask Fit Red Cushion is available in 40 inclusive shades, making it easy to find one that matches your skin tone. Being aware of my skin tone, I opted for 13cFair. But I must confess, upon receiving the product, I was somewhat surprised to find it initially looked darker than the shade I had picked. Nevertheless, once I applied it to my skin, it matched perfectly.

The product is lightweight and evens out skin tone, but you might need to apply multiple layers to cover the skin imperfections you're concerned about. I had to layer it several times to address my problem areas, which it didn't fully cover, but the product didn't feel heavy or cakey. Regarding the 72-hour coverage claim, I noticed that, like all makeup, it faded over the course of the day. This is why I think having the compact is essential for touching up your makeup throughout the day.
Additionally, I have sensitive skin and found that TIRTIR didn't irritate my skin or cause breakouts from clogged pores. Liquid foundation can clog pores, especially if it contains heavy oils, waxes, or occlusive silicones. You can view the complete list of ingredients here:

How did it compare to the BB cream I use most often? BB cream, which stands for Beauty Balm, is a unique product that combines skincare and makeup in one. It typically offers a sheer coverage while focusing primarily on hydration and promoting a natural, radiant glow. This makes it particularly suitable for individuals with dry or normal skin types, as it helps to nourish the skin while providing a light tint that evens out the complexion. The formulation of BB creams often includes beneficial ingredients like antioxidants, vitamins, and SPF, which contribute to both skin health and a polished appearance.
In contrast, the cushion foundation I tried offers a different experience. While it also provides coverage, its texture and finish differ significantly from that of BB cream. The formula is more buildable, enabling users to achieve a greater range of coverage from sheer to medium. However, despite this, I still find myself gravitating towards my BB cream more often than not. The BB cream's lightweight feel and hydrating properties align better with my skincare needs, especially on days when I prefer a more natural look without feeling weighed down by makeup.
That said, I do appreciate having the cushion foundation in my makeup arsenal, particularly for touch-ups while I am on the go. Its compact design makes it incredibly portable, allowing me to easily carry it in my handbag or even a small clutch.
Overall, I would rate the cushion foundation favorably for its portability and lightweight texture. It serves as a practical solution for those moments when I need a quick refresh without the hassle of carrying multiple products.
