The Unove Line

I'm in love! Not with the attractive model promoting this shampoo, but with the Unove line itself. If you search "the best Korean haircare products" on Google or browse haircare articles in well-known beauty magazines like Allure, you'll find that Unove is consistently ranked among the top ten.
UNOVE, a premium Korean haircare brand by Dr.FORHAIR, focuses on restoring damaged hair with high levels of protein and amino acids. Renowned for achieving "glass-like shine," its popular offerings include the Deep Damage Treatment EX, Silk Oil Essence, and Heating Guard No-Wash Treatment, delivering salon-quality care for hair damaged by chemicals or heat.
In general, Korean hair-care products are quite similar to their skin-care equivalents. They are formulated with potent ingredients such as cica, peptides, niacinamide, salicylic acid, and ceramides, making them appear as though they could fit right into your skin-care routine. But what makes Korean skin-care and hair-care products so alike?
In essence, K-beauty places equal importance on scalp care as it does on facial care, particularly during the colder winter months when dry air and low humidity can damage both your skin and scalp. The scalp is often seen as an extension of the face, and ensuring it remains hydrated and nourished is crucial for keeping your hair healthy and avoiding dryness, flakiness, and irritation. Ultimately, taking care of your scalp is what will protect your hair. Focusing on your scalp’s needs is essential for preserving overall hair health, especially in the drying winter season.

Over the years, I've experimented with numerous skincare and haircare products, often ending up disappointed regardless of their cost. Salon products, in particular, were too harsh for my scalp and hair and didn't justify their price. Recently, I tried the Korean Unove Deep Damage Repair Shampoo, the Frizz Calming Sleek Conditioner, and the Leave In Conditioner, and I'm convinced. These products are gentle on my scalp and hair, providing a salon-fresh look at a fraction of the price of salon products.

The shampoo, available in a 16.9 oz. (500mL) size, is priced at $28 at Sephora (with a 1.7 oz./52 mL mini bottle option for just $8). It is free from silicones and sulfates. Sulfates are strong cleansers that strip away natural oils, causing dryness in curly, dry, or color-treated hair. Silicones can reduce frizz and add shine, but non-water-soluble types can accumulate, resulting in heavy, dull, and brittle hair over time.
The Unove Deep Damage Repair Shampoo functions similarly to a clarifying shampoo but is milder, offering a gentle fruity-floral musk fragrance with hints of citrus and sweet berries. It effectively cleanses your hair and scalp, eliminating dirt and residue without leading to dryness, flakiness, or itchiness. My main concerns with my long, color-treated hair were split ends and breakage, but after just one use, I discovered that this shampoo fortifies damaged strands.

Its list of ingredients include: Water/Aqua/Eau, Sodium C14-16 Olefin Sulfonate, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Cocamide MEA, Fragrance/Parfum, Coco-Glucoside, Decyl Glucoside, Dipropylene Glycol, Sodium Chloride, Sodium Benzoate, PPG-3 Caprylyl Ether, Polyquaternium-10, Caprylyl Glycol, Citric Acid, Hydroxypropyl Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride, Disodium EDTA, Hydrolyzed Collagen, Butylene Glycol, Hydrolyzed Silk, Aspergillus Ferment, Arginine, Glycerin, 1,2-Hexanediol, Panthenol, Linum Usitatissimum (Linseed) Seed Extract, Salvia Hispanica Seed Extract, Polyglyceryl-10 Laurate, Hydrolyzed Keratin, Avena Sativa (Oat) Protein Extract, Hydrolyzed Corn Protein, Hydrolyzed Soy Protein, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Extract, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract, Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Flower Extract, Monarda Didyma Leaf Extract, Mentha Piperita (Peppermint) Leaf Extract, Freesia Refracta Extract, Benzyl Alcohol, Xylitol, Caprylic Acid, Silk Amino Acids, Ethyl Hexanediol, Camellia Japonica Seed Oil, Argania Spinosa Kernel Oil, Ethylhexylglycerin, Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil, Macadamia Integrifolia Seed Oil, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Hexyl Cinnamal, Limonene, Citronellol, Geraniol.
Similar to other K-Beauty products, this one is designed to be layered with additional treatments, such as conditioner, to attain a smooth, glass-like texture. I've never been able to achieve this with other at-home products and have only experienced this degree of softness after visiting a salon.
Keep an eye out for my upcoming posts about the conditioner and the leave-in treatment.
